The Elders, Deacons and Evangelist: Shepherding, Serving, Preaching
God's Moody family is overseen by two shepherds, David Miles and Tim Parker. Tim and his wife Jan, both natives of northeast Alabama, have worshipped with the Moody church since 1988. Their two adult children also assemble at Moody – their daughter Rebecca and their son Ethan (wife, Chanelle and their daughter, Chloe). Tim works as Associate Director of Sponsored Programs at UAB. David and his wife Nancy moved to the Moody area from Vestavia Hills in 2006. David and Nancy’s younger son and his family also attend at Moody: Nathan, Emily and their children, Adelyn Lee, Eleanor (“Ellie”) Kate and Samuel Jacob. Their older son and his family, Patrick and Jessica and their two children, live in Temple Terrace, Florida where they are members of the Temple Terrace church; their oldest child, Ashley Hendricks and her husband Colin, live in the Atlanta area, where they attend the Embry Hills congregation with their two children. David is a retired secondary school teacher and administrator. Nancy is also retired from her career as an RN. The congregation is served by five deacons, Victor Hartsfield, Richard Lovell, Ray Burns, Nathan Miles and Justin Padgett.
Victor and Linda Hartsfield have been members at Moody since 2011. They have two adult children, Andrea and Denice. Victor is a retiree from the telephone company, and Linda is a retired school office worker. Victor’s primary areas of responsibility are:
- Treasurer
- Member benevolence
- Interior building maintenance, repair and renovation
Richard Lovell and his wife, Amanda, have two children, Anna and Addison (“Addie”). They have attended at Moody since 2003. Richard is a Trussville police officer, and Amanda is a radiologist at Children’s Hospital. Richard’s main areas of service for the church are:
- Security and safety
- Younger members: High school/college, young singles, and young families
- Ordering supplies for evangelistic activities and projects
- Assisting the preacher in planning and carrying out evangelistic outreach
- New member integration, Visitor welcome
Ray Burns was baptized in to Christ and identified with the Moody church in 2012. He soon married Cindy Holt, another member of our family. Ray works for the Hoover Fire Department as an underwater search and rescue specialist, and Cindy teaches at Brookwood Forest Elementary School in Mountain Brook. Ray and Cindy have one daughter, Lily Grace. Ray’s duties as deacon include:
- Assist with maintenance, repair, and renovation of the building interior
- Maintenence of grounds and building exterior
- Congregational “in-reach” – maintaining close contact with and seeing to the needs of our elderly and shut-in members.
Nathan Miles teaches US History and coaches at Vestavia Hills High School and Liberty Park Middle School. His wife Emily is an RN at Cardio-Vascular Associates. They have worshipped at Moody since December of 2017. They have three children, Adelyn, Ellie Kate and Samuel. Nathan's deacon duties are:
- Oversee children's classes - organization, teachers, curriculum
- Social media
- Young adult classes and programs
Justin Padgett, a Kentucky native, is a veterinarian at the Branchville Veterinary Clinic. He is the son of Rick and Janet Padgett, who are members of the church in St. Augustine, FL. He and his wife Karen have assembled at Moody since 2016. Karen grew up in Alabama and is a stay-at-home mom to their three children, Coleman, James and Brenton. Karen is the daughter of Ken and Sharon Craig, who attend the Helena congregation and where Ken is an elder. Justin's responsiblities are:
- Monthly worship assignments
- Organize and assign visitation for Helen Hammond
Our evangelist, Jonathan Caldwell, came from Russellville, Alabama to work with the Moody congregation January of 2018. Jonathan and his wife Tiffany have three children – James, Lillian Gail and Charlie. Jonathan is a fourth generation Gospel preacher. The elders have assigned Jonathan a single vital task: to “preach the word, be prepared in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, [and] exhort with complete patience and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2). Jonathan keeps regular office hours at the building from 8:00 am until about 5:00 pm, Tuesday through Friday, and 9:00 am until 5:00 pm on Monday. These hours are flexible, depending on Jonathan’s schedule of visitations and evangelistic work in the community. He is available to discuss with you matters of doctrine, your personal life-walk in Christ or any other spiritual concern you have.
